Gary Lanier Orchestrating for LifeWay Worship Project

LifeWay Worship Project | Hot Springs Hymnal In August of 2007, Gary Lanier, composer and orchestrator for the LifeWay Worship Project, having finished his assigned hymn orchestrations, took a short vacation break with his wife, Valleta, to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
With laptop in hand, they settled in the motel for some much needed R & R. Quite unexpectedly, another orchestration assignment arrived, via email. It was the hymn, WHY DO I SING ABOUT JESUS. A quick glance around the room, and through his briefcase, reminded Gary that he failed to bring a Baptist Hymnal.
Forgetting the R & R, he began to contemplate how he could begin the orchestration, though he had no hymnal for reference. He announced to Valleta that he would, “be right back”, and out the door he went. Valleta imagined he was in search of a Baptist Book Store.
A few minutes passed and Gary returned, hymnal in hand. “Where did it come from?” Valleta wanted to know, not remembering a Baptist Book Store close to the motel. Gary began his story...
He remembered that First Baptist Church of Hot Springs was just a few blocks from the motel. He proceeded to the church, marched through the front doors, as if he had done it a thousand times, though he had never been there before, asking for directions to the choir room. Upon arriving in the choir room, he noticed people sitting on the floor, putting together packets for a mission ministry. He looked around for leadership and found none. Everyone just seemed to think Gary belonged in the choir room. He began to look for a hymnal, and found one in a choir member’s music file. He snatched it, and returned to the motel room.
That day and night he worked on the hymn orchestration, using the “borrowed” hymnal. The next day, he announced again, “be right back”. This time, Valleta knew where he was going, with hymnal in hand. It was returned to the choir member’s music file, with no one ever knowing.
Gary Lanier would like to thank First Baptist Church, Hot Spring, Arkansas, for the use of its Baptist Hymnal in the orchestration of WHY DO I SING ABOUT JESUS for the LifeWay Worship Project.
